The following steps should be followed to allow an OS/2 machine to log in to an NT domain and access resources. First, the following is assumed:

For all of the stages below, please insert the OS/2 Warp CD.
  1. Install File and Print Client and TCP/IP Services
  2. Configure MPTS
  3. Configure TCP/IP
  4. Adding Users

  1. Install File and Print Client and TCP/IP Services
    1. In the System Setup folder, open the Install/Remove folder.
    2. Select Selective Install for Networking.
    3. Select Advanced Installation and click Next .
    4. Select File and Print Client (if not already installed).
    5. Select TCP/IP Services (if not already installed). NOTE:If both File and Print Client and TCP/IP Services are already installed, then click Previous and Exit and skip to Configure MPTS

    6. Click Next.
    7. On the Configuration window, please configure all that apply. For example, if TCP/IP Services was not checked above because it was already installed, then the configuration information for TCP/IP will not need to be entered.
      File and Print Sharing Services. Enter the following information:
      1. Workstation name - the name for the workstation as it will be known on the peer network. Typically, it is the same as the TCP/IP hostname.
      2. Installation drive - local drive on which to install the files.
      3. Workstation description - the description for the machine.
      4. Domain name - the name of the NT domain that the machine will be logging into.
      5. Check Install LAN Server Administration.
      6. Check Install Sharing.
      7. Un-check Delete UserID database (NET.ACC) if you would like to create a new UserID.

      Network Adapters for File and Print Sharing. Enter the following information:
      1. If an adapter, or adapters, is listed, please select the one that will be used for connecting to the NT domain.
      2. If no adapter is listed, please install one in the Network Adapters and Protocol Services section, and then return to this section.

      UserID and Password. Enter the following information:
      1. Userid - default administrator-level userid for this OS/2 machine. You can also use your userid for the NT domain.
      2. Password - password for the default userid.
      3. Verify Password - password for the default userid, re-typed.

      TCP/IP Services. Enter the following information:
      1. Un-check DHCP Server is available on the LAN.
      2. TCP/IP address - the machine's IP address.
      3. Subnet mask - usually 255.255.255.0.
      4. Router - IP address of the machine's default router, or gateway.
      5. Host Name - the machine's hostname.
      6. TCP/IP Domain Name - the machine's domain name.
      7. Name Server - IP address of the machine's default name server, or DNS.

      Network Adapters and Protocol Services . Enter the following information:
      1. If no adapter is listed in the Current Configuration, or the adapter listed is incorrect, select Add adapter... and add the driver for the correct network adapter.
      2. If IBM OS/2 NETBIOS, IBM TCP/IP, and IBM OS/2 NETBIOS OVER TCP/IP are not listed in the Current Configuration, select Add protocol... and add any that are missing.
      3. For IBM OS/2 NETBIOS OVER TCP/IP, make sure that the network number at the beginning of the line is one more than the other entries. If not, select Change number... and change the number.

    8. Click Install. Click OK on any messages about NetBIOS parameters being tuned. Also, when prompted, allow the machine to shutdown and be rebooted.
    9. After the machine reboots and finishes copying files, File and Print Client and TCP/IP Services will be installed.



  2. Configure MPTS
    1. In the System Setup folder, select MPTS, or type mpts from an OS/2 command line.
    2. Select Configure.
    3. Select LAN adapters and protocols and select Configure.
    4. If no adapter is listed in the Current Configuration, or the adapter listed is incorrect, select Add in the Network Adapters section and add the driver for the correct network adapter.
    5. If IBM OS/2 NETBIOS, IBM TCP/IP, and IBM OS/2 NETBIOS OVER TCP/IP are not listed in the Current Configuration, select Add in the Protocols section and add any that are missing.
    6. For IBM OS/2 NETBIOS OVER TCP/IP, make sure that the network number at the beginning of the line is one more than the other entries. If not, select IBM OS/2 NETBIOS OVER TCP/IP, select Change number..., and change the number.

      NOTE: This protocol is required if your NT domain is on a different subnet. If the NT domain is in the same subnet (for example, the machines are plugged into the same hub), then you may omit this protocol.
    7. For IBM OS/2 NETBIOS, no additional configuration is needed.
    8. For IBM TCP/IP, no additional configuration is needed.
    9. Select IBM OS/2 NETBIOS OVER TCP/IP and select Edit.
    10. Select Driver paramters and select Configure.
    11. For Parameters for IBM OS/2 NETBIOS OVER TCP/IP, enter the following information:
      1. Node Type - H-Node is usually the best bet. Check the online help for a list of choices and their definitions.
      2. NetBIOS Name Server address - IP address of the primary WINS server.
      3. Backup NetBIOS Name Server address - IP address of the secondary WINS server.
      4. NetBIOS Datagram Distributor address - IP address of the primary WINS server.
      5. Backup NetBIOS Datagram Distributor address - IP address of the secondary WINS server.
      6. Maximum number of name-ip address pairs in names file - any number will do. I usually use 20.
      7. Click OK.
    12. Select Names list and select Configure.
    13. For Names List, select Add and enter the following information for any NT machines whose shares you frequently access:
      1. NetBIOS name prefix - machine name for the NT machine.
      2. Host name of IP address - hostname or IP address for the NT machine.
      3. Click OK when done.
    14. Select Broadcast list and select Configure.
    15. For Broadcast List, select Add and enter the hostname or IP addresses for the primary and secondary WINS servers. These entries are especially important if you chose H-Node or P-Node as the node type.
    16. Click OK when done.
    17. Click Close.
    18. Click OK.
    19. Click Close.
    20. Click Exit.
    21. Check Update CONFIG.SYS and click Exit.
    22. Click OK.
    23. Click Exit.
    24. If IBM OS/2 NETBIOS OVER TCP/IP is one of the protocols used by this machine, edit x:\IBMLAN\IBMLAN.INI where x: is the drive on which File and Print Client was installed. Ensure that the following lines are somewhere in the file:
        net1 = NETBEUI$,0,LM10,100,150,14
        net2 = TCPBEUI$,1,LM10,102,175,14
      
        wrknets = NET1,NET2
      
        srvnets = NET1,NET2
      

      In the net1 = and net2 = lines, the values for the last four entries are not important. However, the first two values should appear as they do above. For the wrknets = and srvnets = lines, ensure that both NET1 and NET2 are there.
    25. If TCP/IP Services has already been configured, reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.



  3. Configure TCP/IP
    1. In the System Setup folder, select TCP/IP Configuration (LAN), or type tcpcfg from an OS/2 command line.
    2. Network. Enter the following information:
      1. For LAN interface 0, check Enable interface.
      2. Select Manually, using:.
      3. IP address - the machine's IP address.
      4. Subnet Mask - usually 255.255.255.0.
    3. Routing. If no routing information is listed, or the values are incorrect, select Add.
      Enter the following information:
      1. Add entry - Before.
      2. Route type - Default.
      3. Router address - IP address of the machine's default router, or gateway.
      4. Click Add.
    4. Hostnames (Page 1). Enter the following information:
      1. This machine's hostname - hostname for this machine (duh!).
      2. Local domain name - domain name for this machine.

        NOTE:If you would like to create a domain search list, leave this field blank, select LAN domain searchlist, click Add, and enter in the domain to add to the search list. If both the LAN domain name field and the LAN domain searchlist field both have data, you will receive a warning message when you save the TCP/IP configuration, which can be ignored.
      3. Nameserver addresses - click Add and enter the IP addresses for all of this machine's domain name servers.
    5. Hostnames (Page 2).
      1. Check Look through HOSTS list before going to nameserver.
      2. Click Add to add the hostname and IP address of any machine that might not be in the nameserver's HOSTS file.
    6. Autostart. You may leave this as is, or start whatever TCP/IP services that you desire. None of them are required for logging into the NT domain.
    7. General. Enter the following information:
      1. Username - usually blank, but it can be set to a userid that is authorized to log into your machine with REXEC.
      2. Timezone - timezone for this machine.
    8. For Security, no additional changes are needed unless you want to allow other users to telnet and ftp to this machine. Setting those values is not required for accessing NT shares and will not be explained here.
    9. For Servers, Socks, Printing, Mail, and Sendmail, no additional changes are needed.
    10. Close the configuration window, and click Save.
    11. If you get a message about updating CONFIG.SYS, click Yes.
    12. If you get a message about default routers, click OK.
    13. If you get a message about autostarting sendmail, click No, unless you actually run Ultimail or need it for another reason. It is not required to log into an NT domain.
    14. Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.



  4. Adding Users
    1. In the System Setup folder, select the UPM Services folder, and select User Account Management, or type upmaccts from an OS/2 command line.

      NOTE:You may need to log on to your local machine with the default userid and password that were created during the installation of File and Print Client.
    2. Select Manage Users from the Manage pulldown menu. If there is no Manage pulldown menu, select Select destination from the Actions pulldown menu, choose Local workstation, and click OK.
    3. Double-click the ---NEW--- entry and select Add a new user ID... from the menu.
    4. Add a New User. Enter the following information:
      1. User ID - userid.
      2. Comment - description of the new userid, like a name.
      3. User Type - Administrator.
      4. Logon - Allowed.
      5. Password - enter the password for this user id in both the Type password and type fields. If this userid is the one logging into the NT domain, be sure to use the same password as this userid uses on the NT domain.
      6. Options - Select Password Required.
      7. Click OK.
    5. When all the userids have been added, select Exit user management from the Exit pulldown menu.
    6. Select Exit profile management from the Exit pulldown menu.
